Shetland Cat Rescue recommend wire, top opening cat carriers. These are robust and will last for decades. They are easy to clean and most importantly they are safe and secure.
The more popular type of carriers, made of plastic with a grill at the front, can allow cats to escape if they are not correctly assembled or old. They are also more liable to break, if for example if the cat is heavy and jumps on the top. Plastic cracks easily, making it unsafe for use.
Never fasten a carrier with cable ties, as a vet may need to get into the carrier quickly in an emergency.
Fabric carriers, holdalls, backpack, slings or harnesses are not recommended either, as cats can feel insecure, possibly escape and these are difficult to clean.
Before use it is a good idea to leave the carrier where the cat can get accustomed to it and use as a bed. This can make trips to the vets less traumatic, for both cat and owner!
Wire carriers come in different sizes to accommodate either larger cats, two cats, or a litter of kittens. The very best sort open at the top and the front. This allows the cat to walk in at the front, but lifted out or examined by the vet from the top.
It is good to make (or purchase) a cover for the carrier, to help the cat feel secure and safe. You can knit, sew or crochet them or just put a blanket or towel over.
Wire carriers are more expensive, but you can’t put a price on your cat’s safety. They also will never need replacing.
